Foundation funds luxury spa at the Alan Shearer Centre
27 September 2016
Alan Shearer Activity Centre member, three-year-old, Jessica Robertson, was a little girl with a big task when she joined Alan Shearer CBE to officially open the Centre's exciting new hydrotherapy suite yesterday.
After cutting the ribbon with Alan, Jessica couldn't wait to be the first person to try out the new pool with her mum, Pam.
The Activity Centre's new hydrotherapy pool offers all the grandeur of a top quality spa, but it also has a serious role to play in providing therapeutic benefits to disabled people of all ages from around the region.
The low impact exercise offered in the warmth of the pool can ease joint pain and increase freedom of movement to strengthen weakened muscles. The pool is also packed with stunning lighting, music and water features which benefit people with sensory impairments.
Paid for by the remarkable fundraising efforts of the Alan Shearer Foundation, the hydrotherapy suite is twice the size of the original pool, offering more space and a wealth of fun and therapeutic features.
At the opening, Alan Shearer said, "I hope that everyone, when they see the pool, is as happy as I am. The generosity of so many people helps us to give this away for free and I want to continue to do that because it's very important."
St Cuthberts Care Chief Executive, Moira Ashman added, "Alan's ongoing fundraising efforts have helped to make our Centre the only one in our region to offer such quality, specialist facilities entirely free of charge for disabled people. We couldn't have achieved this without Alan and I can't thank him enough."
