Newcastle Falcons score 53,000 for the Shearer Foundation
4 November 2016
It was back to Kingston Park for Alan Shearer this Thursday, a few weeks after playing at the ground in the Legends charity football match in aid of his Foundation.
Alan was meeting Newcastle Falcons chairman, Semore Kurdi, and members of the team to collect a cheque for £53,000. That was the tremendous total raised by the 6,000 spectators who paid to see famous names from Newcastle United's past take on the ‘Entertainers' from Manchester United.
Although Newcastle could not repeat their famous 5–0 victory over Manchester of 20 years ago, everyone agreed that the 2-2 draw was a fair enough result.
Alan said, “Kingston Park Stadium was a brilliant venue in which to stage the event. Newcastle Falcons were outstanding hosts and the money raised will help ensure the Foundation's good work can carry on.”
The £53,000 is a fantastic boost to the Alan Shearer Foundation, which needs to raise at least £250,000 each year to fund the Alan Shearer Centre's specialist facilities for disabled people from across the region.
“We are incredibly grateful to everyone who came out and supported the game,” said Alan. “ The money raised is so important - and I even managed to sneak my goal onto Match of the Day!”
