The Foundation funds the free facilities at the Alan Shearer Centre

The Alan Shearer Foundation celebrates its first anniversary today after a fantastic year of fundraising.

Thousands of disabled people have been able to use the specialist facilities at the Alan Shearer Centre for free thanks to the support shown for the Foundation this year. The fundraising initiative was launched at the Centre by Alan, with the help of fellow St Cuthberts Care patrons Ant and Dec, Lady Elsie Robson and Mike Browne, on 31 May last year.

“We would like to thank everyone who has made the Foundation such a success in its first year and helped us to reach our target, whether it was through donations, attending our events, sponsorship or by fundraising on our behalf,” said St Cuthberts Care Deputy Director, Moira Ashman.

“We really need to keep the momentum going through this new financial year to enable us to continue to develop the Centre’s specialist provision for children and adults with complex disabilities and acute sensory impairments,” she added.

The aim of the Foundation is to raise at least £250,000 every year to help disabled people throughout the region by offering free activities and some subsidised respite breaks to Alan Shearer Centre members, as well as extending the scope of our disability services.

Thanks to the Foundation new residential accommodation at the Alan Shearer Centre, planned for summer 2013, will offer a unique service for adults with physical or learning disabilities in a supported environment, while an extension to the Short Break Centre will also enable more disabled people and their families to benefit from respite breaks.
