An accountancy firm partner from Gateshead has been named as the lucky winner of a Renault Twingo car in the St Cuthberts Care charity raffle.

Peter Gray, 48, from Low Fell, was stunned when he received the phone call to say he had won the Benfield Renault donated car after his raffle number was drawn at a special ceremony at the Alan Shearer Centre this week

Peter, a restructuring and insolvency partner at Rowlands Accountants, bought the Alan Shearer Foundation ticket at a Falcon's rugby event in November where the former England and Newcastle United striker urged matchgoers to enter the raffle.

"When Alan Shearer asks you personally to support his charity you do!" said Peter. "My brother had Downs Syndrome and sadly died in September, so it's quite appropriate because I have dealt with disability for most of my life. I can't believe I've won. I'm absolutely gobsmacked."

Alan Shearer Centre user Carolyn Lawson drew the winning ticket witnessed by St Cuthberts Care charity patrons, Lainya Shearer and Mike Browne. They will be hosting and compering the exclusive Alan Shearer Foundation charity ball at the Newcastle Gateshead Hilton on 17 January where Peter will personally receive the keys to the Twingo from Alan.

Chris Hood, sales manager from Benfield Renault, who was also at the draw, said: "Benfield is absolutely delighted to have helped raise over £26,000 for the Foundation. It's a fantastic local cause."
